Setting Intentions for Cacao Ceremonies: A Masterclass
An intention is the compass. Without one, a ceremony can feel beautiful but directionless.
Setting an intention is often the very first thing a facilitator invites a group to do — and it shapes everything that follows. Here’s how to guide that moment well, whether you’re setting your own intention or holding space for a group to set theirs.
1Why Intention Shapes the Whole Ceremony
An intention gives the nervous system and the mind a direction to settle into, turning a vague “let’s see what happens” into something the body can actually work with.
2How to Guide a Group Through Intention-Setting
- Give a moment of quiet first: invite a few breaths before asking anyone to think or speak.
- Offer a gentle prompt: rather than a blank instruction, give participants a question to orient around.
- Normalize simplicity: remind the group an intention can be one word — “ease,” “clarity,” “open.”
- Don’t require sharing aloud: some participants will want to keep their intention private, and that’s completely valid.
3Personal vs. Group Intentions
- Personal intentions: individual and private, guiding each participant’s own inner experience.
- Group intentions: a shared theme the facilitator sets for the whole circle, useful for themed or recurring ceremonies.
- Combining both: many facilitators open with a group theme, then invite individuals to personalize it for themselves.
4Common Mistakes
- Rushing the moment: skipping straight to serving cacao without pausing for intention weakens the container.
- Overcomplicating the prompt: long, elaborate instructions can pull people into their heads instead of their hearts.
- Pressuring participants to share: requiring intentions to be spoken aloud can shut some people down instead of opening them up.
5Prompts You Can Use Tonight
- “What do I want more of in my life right now?”
- “What am I ready to release?”
- “What would it feel like to trust myself more?”
- “What does my heart need me to hear tonight?”
“An intention doesn’t need to be profound. It just needs to be honest.”
